In a world as fast-paced as the one we live in, when more often than not you’re burning the candle at both ends, you need to take the time to enjoy those simple little things that give relief to you psyche. We’re all different, but here are a few of the things that I like to do to “unwind”.
- go for a leisurely stroll with my wife in our neighborhood. We live on Main Street in a small town where everything naturally moves a little slower at night. We hold hands and share our thoughts about the day, all under the restful ambience of turn-of-the-century homes on a tree-lined street.
- sit on our porch swing with a glass of wine. We probably do this about every other night when the weather’s warm enough. Our porch swing (one I made) is actually out back. My wife and I built a good size pergola over our patio a couple of years ago and that became our outdoor room. It helps that we planted several trees and shrubs in our backyard, and that there’s always plenty of “critters” to watch (we feed just about anything that finds its way into our backyard).
- play with our pooch. We’ll probably always have a dog – one that we’ve adopted from the Humane Society. But whether you’re a dog person or a cat person, nothing soothes your soul like looking into the loving eyes of our little “four-legged children”. They’re always there for you, wagging their tails when you get home and curling up by your feet at night. All they ask in return is a gentle hand to let them know that they’re appreciated.
Whatever does it for you. It’s so easy to get caught up in everything, that unless you ‘make’ the time, you find that you never have the time. And that’s just a real shame.
Until next time, …just relax. J/W
