I know it sounds like a myth to many, but believe it or not, there was a time when the local broadcast news actually carried news. Now I know what you're going to say - "but I like all the cheerful segments, it's a great way to start my day". That's true. A lot of people prefer something more entertaining to start their day off with - and that's fine. I support that. But I wish I had the option to catch more local, regional and national news from one of the local stations.
I live near Indianapolis and every morning from pre-dawn till after everyone has left for work, the local television stations only broadcast about 5% actual news. The rest is made up of one or two things. They either have "live" reports covering the local 'Toy Doll Fair', 'A horse that counts by stomping with his hoof', 'What to do to keep your pipes from freezing' (household not digestive) or some other "filler" that will keep them from having to do their job. The other "news" they broadcast is traffic and weather. I mean like every 3 minutes they cut back to a "live" update of the traffic report. Come on! I mean by the time the news reports most accidents; they'd be cleared up by the time you got there. And the weather! How many different ways can you say and show the same damn thing. And the "meteorologist" (that's a laugh) predicts the weather with such conviction and confidence. We all know how accurate that is! Of course we can't forget about their chance to combine both weather and traffic. About an inch of snow fell overnight, so you can guess what 80% of the news was this morning. My God, you'd think a blizzard hit Indianapolis.
Now as I said, I have no problem with more lighthearted news, like a "Good Morning Indianapolis" type of news. All I'm asking for is an alternative to that. Why can't one of the stations broadcast actual news about what's going on in the nation / world? Before you say it - I'll admit it, I could read the paper while I drink my coffee - problem solved. I know, I know...I'm complaining when the root of the problem may be my own laziness. But hey, I'm an American and being lazy is a god-given right.
Just having fun and blowing off steam. Until next time, keep cool and your eyes glued to the news. J/W
